About us

Distance running, with a team around you.

We're the age-group running squad at Sandringham Athletic Club โ€” masters runners and open-age athletes who train together year-round and race in club colours across both Athletics Victoria seasons.

Whether you're chasing a PB, returning to running after a break, or just want company on your long runs, there's a place for you. Members range from steady social runners through to athletes representing the club at the pointy end of their age group.

The competition

Two seasons. Year-round running.

We line up in club colours across both of Athletics Victoria's flagship competitions. Each runs about ten rounds, with team and individual scoring, and open and masters categories.

Winter season

XCR Series

April – September

Cross country and road racing across Victoria. Cross country at Bundoora Park, Hanging Rock and Cruden Farm. Road races from 5 km to half marathon. Three team relay rounds to bookend and close the season.

Summer season

AV Shield (AVSL)

October – March

The Athletics Victoria Shield League โ€” interclub track and field. Clubs compete across five divisions, scoring points in track, field and walks events from sprints up to 5000 m. Meets run on Saturday afternoons and into the evening, so distance runners get to chase fast times in the cool of the day.

Cross country

Off-road winter races, 8–12 km. Hilly courses, mud, hills and the occasional creek crossing. Junior options at every round.

Road & relays

5 km, 10 km, 15 km and a half marathon, plus three team relay rounds — XC Relays at Jells Park, the Thunderdome, and the Tan to close XCR.

Track & field

Summer afternoons and evenings on the track. Distance runners contest 800 m through 5000 m; sprinters, jumpers and throwers do their thing alongside.

Race calendar

XCR 2026 Fixture
